Events Recap and Other November Stuff

Hey everyone,

We have a lot to get through in a single post, so let’s get the show on the road. First of all, we’d like to give thanks to all members who attended the Pumpkin Carve and Loonie Walk for Water events – it wouldn’t have been such a great success without you. If you weren’t able to attend the events, please wander over to our Picasa albums and take a look at all the fun you missed out!

In the following weeks, we’ll be posting the fundraising results for these two events as well as the results for the Counter Box campaign. So far, it looks as though we may have exceeded our fundraising potential of last year. We’d also like to apologize for not having live Twitter updates during the Loonie Walk for Water event as we were having technical difficulties with the technology.

As usual, we’re quite busy this month also and that means more volunteering opportunities for our General Members!

UNICEF on Campus Floor Hockey Tournament (Nov 22, 2009) – dust off those hockey sticks because it’s hockey season again! To show off our Canadian spirit and love for the sport, we’re hosting a Floor Hockey tournament in order to raise awareness for the access of clean water for under-developed and developing nations. We need referees, time/score keepers and people to work the registration kiosk, so if you’re interested, please email one of our PMs asap. If you do not want to volunteer for this event, how about participating in the event by forming a team? Do it for a good cause, and we promise the prizes will be worth your while.

Geeks Without Sleep (Nov 24-25, 2009) – A collaboration with the VGC, teams of gamers pull off a 24-hour marathon playing games and fundraising for UNICEF. We are told that we need people to collect donations between 9am and 6pm on the 25th of November. If you’re interested in submitting a team to this event, the deadline is this friday and there is a minimum $100 pledge requirement.

International AIDS Awareness Day – Members interested in volunteering for this event will be receiving emails from their respective section leaders very soon.

That’s all for now, but a ton of information will be posted as soon as they’re available

Reminders 10-13-09

Hey UNICEF-ers,

We hope you guys enjoyed your Thanksgiving weekend, here are a few things that we’re up to in the next weeks!

The Loonie Walk for Water – Once again, a reminder that there is an info-session meeting for the Loonie Walk for Water event happening this Wednesday at 5:30 in MSC 297 (located at the SU offices). Please come out if you’re interested in joining the Loonie Walk for Water event! If you’re not able to make the meeting but still want to participate in the event on October 30th at 12-1, you may contact one of our project managers to arrange a time to obtain your pledge sheets!

The Pumpkin Carve – Halloween is closing in quickly and what better way to usher in the festivities than with a pumpkin carve! Our annual Pumpkin Carve event is happening on Thursday Oct 29th at the Science Foyer from 10am-4pm. Come down and show your creativity by carving an awesome design or even volunteer in the setup and take-down of the event! If you’re unable to volunteer that day, come down anyways and vote for the best design!

UNICEF on Campus @ U of C Fundraising Goal for Fall ’09 – Through all the excitement about our upcoming events, we forgot to mention our financial goal for the Fall ’09 semester. We’ve set a goal of $1500 and while it seems like a lofty goal, it’s definitely achievable, especially with the General Membership this year! It was originally set with the purchase of 3 water pumps in mind but since inflation reared its ugly head, the amount will only cover the construction of two. However, this does not mean that the excess funds will go to waste! The surplus money can go towards buying cheaper items such as water sanitation tablets and clean water supplies, so let’s beat expectations for the kids of developing nations!

That’s all for now, stay tuned for more info!
